Embrujo: a story of religion, SUPERSTITION, and cultural identity
“embrujo - bewitch”
Embrujo is an ongoing project that will be periodically released over time in installments through various methods and mediums, exploring many different avenues of creative artistic practices. The project itself is inspired by the history of the 18th century witch trials of Abiquiú, New Mexico (1756-1766). It is presented as an exploration into the themes of religion, superstition, and cultural identity but delves deeper into the many different parallels between those events in history and our current contemporary society. This relatively unknown yet fascinating story is woven into the very fabric and DNA of many ancestral and generational New Mexicans. This is a truly unique and multifaceted story told through art and design and does not shy away from the hard and ugly truths of our history but rather seeks to ask the viewer to confront our tumultuous past in order to learn, reflect, and heal.
